Stoicism: The Key to A Happy Life

To understand how stoicism can be a key to a happy life, you first need to understand what stoicism is. Stoicism is a philosophy of life developed by Hellenistic Greeks and represents a particular way of looking at the problems of the world.
Along with that is a philosophy that explains that you only have real control over yourself and that once you accept this as fact, you will be much happier.
To better understand stoicism, it’s essential to understand the principles and beliefs that guide a stoic. Some texts offer more than 10 principles, but we are focusing on the ten that best describe it.

1. Nature is Rational – The laws of nature are already rational and reasonable.
2. Virtuous Living is Essential – Living according to rational nature is virtuous.
3. Self-Control is Wisdom – You can only control one person, yourself.
4. Avoid Intense Feeling – Stoics seek apatheia instead of passion because feeling too much limits ethical decision making. It can also be called indifference.
5. Act – Act on what you want to achieve. It may be difficult a times but it’s vital that you continue to act.
6. Ask: What Can Go Wrong? – Always consider this question as you make decisions.
7. Go with the Flow – If you do your best, but you don’t get precisely what you want it’s okay.
8. Love Everything That Happens – You cannot control everything that happens, but you can control how you feel about it. Accept and love it as it’s part of your journey.
9. Perception is Key – The only reality is perception and your perception of things is under your control.
10. Mindfulness – Be present here and now and do things because it must be done.

The entire idea of stoicism is summed up in the serenity prayer.

“God grant me the serenity to accept the things that I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Happiness comes from within. Your thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and desires make up your happiness – or can hinder it. When you let go of expectations and follow the practices of Stoicism you can better control your ideas, beliefs, thoughts, judgments, and desires. You’ll be better able to see which actions you need to take to live a more fulfilling and happy life.
